Weathering the Storm

Do or do not. There is no try”

The blog was stuck in my head, refusing to come out.

I’d been struggling with writing it for weeks. Despite a clear vision of what I thought I wanted to say, the words were just plain stuck. The more effort I applied the more mired in concrete they felt.

It appeared the story here wasn’t really about my selected blog topic. The larger issue seemed to be my objection to writing it.

And so, I decided to follow the thread of the resistance I was experiencing instead.

The Law of Reversed Effort

The official label for what I’m experiencing is “The Law of Reversed Effort” which states that the harder we “try” the lower the likelihood of success will be.

“Trying” is a ‘neither here nor there” process that indicates lack of commitment to our goal and provides an excuse for throwing in the towel.

The Power of Setting Clear Intentions

Recently I had the opportunity to witness the results of powerful intention unfolding during a retreat I hosted in Puerto Rico. Participants were asked to spend some time defining their intention for being part of this retreat.

The initial intentions were somewhat vague with responses ranging from “It sounded like a fun idea to come to the retreat”, and “I hope I can grow and change or get over a block in my life”.

Through further discussion, these were sharpened and clarified. As the week unfolded, the deliberateness of the intentions manifested and the magic began. It was like watching a movie where every event, circumstance, and interaction seemed to conspire to bring to focus the lessons and growth opportunities relating to each person’s stated intention.

This experience was a clear reminder that our lives unfold based upon our intentions, whether we set them deliberately or allow our sub-conscious mind to make the decision on our behalf.

The One Thing You Can Do This Year That Will Change The Planet

We can say for certain that 2016 exposed our global vision to the dark side of humanity.

Stories of political fiascoes topped headline news worldwide. Terrorists threatened global safety, killing innocent victims in the most unexpected places. Civil wars slaughtered millions. And, in the U.S., our ethnic inequities boiled to the surface as hatred exposed itself in neighborhoods and cities and even the Presidential election.

The demands of the season are abundant. Shopping, baking, cleaning, entertaining, and parties, are just some of the many additional things “to do” from November until the end of the year. Added into all that is a covert expectation to be cheerful and it’s no wonder stress is in the air!

It doesn’t have to be that way.

You can experience more joy and less stress this year by following a few simple guidelines.

  1. Acknowledge your feelings
    • Awareness is the first step in changing patterns that no longer are working for you.

Recently, I witnessed with awe as a friend struggled through a year of grief, unexpected legal problems, financial distress and more…..alone. These three biggies can trigger depression and bring us to our knees. She felt the full gamut of expected emotions: sadness, fear, anger and loneliness.

And yet, with incredible grace and resolve, she faced her challenges and made her way through the most difficult period of her life. You see, my friend lives with gratitude. It isn’t something saved for when the going gets good. It is why the going gets good.

How I “Found” a $100 Using the Magic and Miracle of Law of Attraction

To Anyone Grieving this Holiday Season

This December marks seven years since my dear friend and lover passed away. Nothing about that winter felt merry, and I certainly didn’t feel in the “holiday spirit.” My heart was breaking while the rest of the world carried on singing carols and exchanging gifts, putting on their best holiday game face. That whole season was a blur.

The mentor at the local grief group suggested “this Christmas will be different and the most important thing is to let it be.” She guided us to do what felt right for others ordered take-out and stayed in. I’ve learned that both are completely okay.

That year I participated in the family Christmas shindig in a zombie-like state, simply going through the motions. It was simply too much, too soon.

A Blanket of Grief

mom-and-me-aug-05More than eight years after my mother’s painful death, grief clings to pieces of me. It’s not constantly present. Often it comes out of nowhere. One day I find myself tearing up upon seeing a small family of her beloved quail scampering across a dusty path where we used to hike. Just last year I broke down sobbing in a remote village on the other side of the world after witnessing an elderly Vietnamese woman, hunched and frail like my mother in her last days, tending to her son.

When I say the word “grief” aloud – or even to myself – it sounds like a great tear. A gash. The brevity of the word, the harshness, evokes the sound of fabric being quickly stretched and then ripped apart. And that’s what it often feels like to me. Deeper than sadness. I was 19 when I was first introduced to the art of Intuition.  I had been living away from home and had grand world travels planned. I was spending time with my parents in the small country town in Australia where I’d been brought up before spreading my wings to go and find my way in the bigger world.

It was an auspicious day. I had just passed my driver’s licence and took the family car for a drive to a nearby beach town where I found myself in the small crystal store staring at a flyer for an Intuition workshop.

International Volunteering: Healing The World – Healing Yourself

About ten years ago I was at work, staring at my computer, eating yet another, bland, microwaved Lean Cuisine lunch at my desk. And then my life changed with the click of a button. I was searching the web for something to hold my attention and stumbled upon an article about a woman.

A woman I wanted to be. She had decided to travel the world and volunteer with animals. image1 She had landed in Africa. And volunteered with lions. Several months later … I was doing the same thing.

International volunteering comes in all shapes and sizes. You don’t have to hang out with ferocious lions. You can teach English, play sports with kids, conduct environmental research and yes, hang out with wild animals. The possibilities are virtually endless.

What you do need to do is make the decision. Do your research. Buy your plane ticket. And get out there. Life is short. People and the environment and the animals need your help. But it’s really up to you to pull the proverbial trigger.

Does Your Comfort Zone Have a Hold on You?

As adults, we human beings are definitely creatures of comfort. There is safety in knowing what to expect. When we abide by established rules governing our thoughts and behaviors, stress and risk are minimized and we experience a state of mental security; we’re in our comfort zone.

Our comfort zone is the creation of our life experiences. Babies are born with a clean slate and day by day, year after year, life experiences begin to fill the energetic space in our mind where our comfort zone resides. Our perceptions and beliefs are formed and become the habits of thought that govern our lives.

But, we live in a world full of uncertainty. And sometimes things happen to us by chance or by choice that require a response outside the boundaries of our existing comfort zone parameters.

Lessons from the “Wild”

 Many people are familiar with Reese Witherspoon’s role in the movie “Wild,” based on Cheryl Strayed’s 2012 memoir Wild. If you saw the movie, you know the journey she took was no walk in the park

I recently had my own “Wild” experience backpacking a section of the John Muir Trail injackiefoskett-johnmuir3 California for 6 days. And although it was nowhere near as theatrical as the movie “Wild,” it certainly contained many moments that caused me to reevaluate the drama happening in my own head!

Even though I trained and prepared for this trek with my husband for a good 6 months, I still was caught off guard at how much of a struggle it was for me. We were in high altitudes and doing lots of climbing on trails that were strenuous. I was surprised how labored my breathing got going uphill and was sure something was “wrong” with me!

Tips and Tools for Giving Your Overworked Brain a Break

It starts with each of us individually. Setting some personal boundaries and putting our own oxygen mask on first will create a chain reaction that will have a positive impact on those around us as the ripple effect is set in motion.

Here are a few ideas for giving your brain a chance to restore and rejuvenate on a daily basis:

  • Set your personal and work email address up so they don’t feed through the same email provider on your devices. That way you can still receive personal ecopy-of-unplug-9-22-2016mails without being distracted by work email during non-working hours.
  • Stop checking emails first thing in the morning and right before you go to bed. Establish “working” hours that are reasonable for your work situation and add them to your email signature, if necessary, to set expectations.

I met with a client recently who was driving herself into a frenzy everyday trying to accomplish all the obligations and duties in front of her. She was in tears talking about how there was never time for herself, and that everyone came before her. Of course, even in saying it she realized that she was complicit in this daily merry-go-round.

She desperately wanted to find space for herself in her life. Time to relax, play, take up a hobby, and create joy in her household. But that voice in her head kept pointing out all the chores to be done first, and goading her to be perfect in the eyes of all she encountered. Giving My Epiphany a Window of Opportunity

A couple of short vacations over the summer months opened my eyes to the importance – no, the necessity – of resting my brain while experiencing a change in environment and routine, i.e., taking a vacation.

After just a few days (mostly) disconnected from my laptop and connected to outdoor activities, I began to feel my shoulders drop, my mind open up, my worldview expand and creative energy building.

I heard the voice inside speaking very clearly. What both my body and mind want and need is time for rejuvenation.

Being a soloprenuer of this young business adds an additional layer of challenge in taking time off. There’s always work to be done. And, having grown up on a Midwestern farm where work was required 7-days and 52 weeks a year, work has been part of my routine since I was 8 years old. I know how to work.
