The women I teach in my HypnoBirthing®, The Mongan Method childbirth education classes, tell me they sure have! They hear these types of disempowering statements from well intentioned friends, family and even complete strangers. They find it interesting how people will readily share their “horror” stories when they see a pregnant woman!

Just like the majority of us, they’ve seen the movies that portray childbirth as extremely painful or comical and something to dread.

Anticipating pain and dreading bringing your baby into the world doesn’t sound like a great way to spend nine months! Yet, too often, this is the mass message that permeates our culture. It produces fear, stress and anxiety in expectant moms. This can often lead to complications in labor due to the physiological response fear and stress play out in birth, which, unfortunately, circles back to the belief that birth must be painful and something to fear.

When fear is present, tension in the body exists, which causes disharmony in the birthing muscles. This causes pain. It doesn’t have to be that way. Giving birth does not come with a guarantee of pain. Nor should it.

In fact, when labor is undisturbed, when mothers feel safe and secure, their primal instinctive brains kick in which allow their bodies to birth in a much more comfortable and easier manner.

pregnant women in a rowWhen fear is absent, when the body is relaxed and there is trust in the process, there is no resistance. The birthing body can simply do what it knows how to do, allowing women to experience birth in a heightened aware yet relaxed and comfortable state. This produces a much more supportive environment and experience for mothers, their partners, and for the babies being born.

This is the premise and teachings of HypnoBirthing®, The Mongan Method.

Developed by Marie Mongan in 1989 and based on natural childbirth practices developed by English obstetrician Dr. Grantly Dick-Read, HypnoBirthing® “The Mongan Method” teaches women and their partners how to replace the fear that causes tension and pain with a sense of joyful calm.
